Models

Define what you measure once, and reuse it everywhere

A model describes a kind of entity once: which values it measures over time, which facts describe it, their units and ranges. Queries, datasets and notebooks written on the model work on every asset that follows it.

Illustrative example

A definition that assets inherit

  • Variables, fixed values, events

Variables are measured over time, fixed values describe one entity and do not change, events record each time a yes/no becomes true. Each has a snake_case name, a type, a unit and a range.

  • How a variable is read

Limits (low alarm, low warning, high warning, high alarm), a label for each state, a default aggregation and whether it is additive. A dataset field that reads it inherits all of these.

  • Draft, publish, new version

A draft changes freely. A published version does not: you publish a new one, and assets stay on the version they were built on until you move them.

  • Families and documents

Models nest in a hierarchy, shown as a tree or a graph, and can be copied with or without their children. Attach manuals and datasheets to a model: every asset that follows it shows them.

How you use it

  1. 01

    Create the model

Lab › Models › New model. Choose a parent if the model belongs to a family, then add variables, fixed values and events with their type, unit and range.

  2. 02

Save as a draft and publish

Check it as a draft, then Publish. From then on assets can be built on it and its definition no longer changes.

  3. 03

    Create assets and write once

Create asset opens the new-asset panel with the model already chosen. Queries and notebooks written on the model read every asset that follows it.

Frequently asked questions

A model is a kind, an asset is one real instance of it: one model, many assets. The model does not know where data comes from; the asset binds its variables to tags.
