Numbers that mean the same thing on every page
A dataset is what a query promises to return, field by field. Widgets, notebook cells and Athena read the dataset, so the query can change and you are warned before it takes a field away.

| Field | Role | Unit | Aggregate |
|---|---|---|---|

Fields with a role
Each field has a role in the dataset's shape, a type, a unit, limits and the query column it reads. A series has one X axis and at least one Y value; there are also single value, categories, table and transitions shapes.
Honest aggregation
Each field says whether it may be summed. Asked for coarser intervals, keys group, additive fields use their aggregate, shares are recomputed as a ratio of totals, states and counters take first or last value.
Grades: draft, certified, deprecated
Certify the dataset to use: it is proposed first in every picker and Athena prefers it. A deprecated one keeps feeding its widgets but is not offered to new ones.
Usage you can read
The Usage tab lists the widgets by dashboard and the notebook cells by notebook that read it, and each field's readers. A dataset that something reads cannot be deleted.
How you use it
- 01
Start from a query
Every saved query derives a dataset of its own. Promote it to give it a name, an owner and a description, or create one from the query's Overview.
- 02
Check the contract
On Contract, open each field: label, unit, aggregate and limits. On Preview, read it over the Lab's period at different granularities.
- 03
Certify and use
Certify it, then bind widgets and notebook cells to its fields, or use Add to a dashboard with a Line, KPI or Table widget.
In detail
- Shapes
- Series, single value, categories, table, transitions. A role the shape does not have is refused.
- Tabs
- Contract, Preview and Usage.
- Aggregates
- Average, sum, minimum, maximum, first value, last value, count, distinct count, ratio of totals.
- Additivity
- Key, additive, windowed, not additive. A field may narrow what it inherits, never widen it.
- Grades
- Implicit, draft, certified, deprecated; duplicate, change owner and delete from the menu.
- Permission
- Editor › Datasets › Read to read and preview, Write to create, promote, certify, change and delete.
Frequently asked questions
The query computes, the dataset is the contract: the named fields it promises to return. Widgets and notebook cells bind to the dataset, not to the query.
Before a save that would take a field away, Muvia lists what reads it. A widget whose column is gone shows Field not connected until it is fixed.
Not while a widget or notebook cell reads it: the dialog lists them. Rebind them or deprecate the dataset instead. The query and its data are never deleted with it.
