Ask your data once, reuse the answer everywhere
Queries are where data becomes an answer in Muvia. You build them in steps or write them in SQL, try them without saving, and datasets, widgets and reports grow from there.
SQL generated from the steps
SELECT area,
count() AS orders
FROM orders
WHERE status = 'closed'
GROUP BY area
ORDER BY orders DESCResult
| area | orders |
|---|---|
| North-West | 1,284 |
| North-East | 1,102 |
| Centre | 763 |
Illustrative example
From question to answer without an IT ticket
In steps or in SQL
The builder composes the query step by step and shows the SQL it generates. When you need to, take the SQL over by hand and from then on the definition is your SQL.
Try it before you save it
Run the draft with ⌘/Ctrl+Enter: the result appears at once and nothing saved changes. You can also profile any column.
With parameters
A query can take parameters, so the same question serves other periods, customers or products without a copy.
Always on the right data
A saved query is the base of a dataset. Dashboards, notebooks and reports read the dataset, and the Usage tab tells you who uses the query.
How you work
- 01
Start from a table
Pick the table of a connected source, or ask Athena to write the query. Athena is a separate AI module.
- 02
Add the steps
Filters, columns, groupings: each step shows in the result. For a special case, close the chain with a hand-written SELECT.
- 03
Save and reuse
Save the query and make a dataset of it. When it helps, save it as a table that a flow keeps up to date.
In detail
- Ways to write
- Step builder, or SQL written by hand in the SQL tab.
- Execution
- User queries run on a read-only login to the analytics engine.
- Trying
- The draft runs without being saved; the result is marked as unsaved.
- Saved table
- A query can be read from a saved table, kept up to date by a flow.
- Permissions
- Writing SQL by hand needs the permission to run queries.
Frequently asked questions
No. The builder composes the query in steps and generates the SQL. Anyone who knows SQL can write it directly in the SQL tab.
No. User queries run on a read-only login. Muvia reads your data, it does not rewrite it.
The query is the question, the dataset is its answer with stable fields. Dashboards and reports bind to the dataset, which is why changing the query does not break them.
